There’s something undeniably enchanting about Maharashtra’s Sahyadri range, especially when you’re treading a route as breathtaking as the Jivdhan Fort. Early morning today, we laced up our boots and began an unforgettable adventure into the wild guided by nature, a drone, and sheer curiosity.
From the first footstep in the dense jungles of Jivdhan, we were transported into another world misty trails, the sound of chirping birds, rustling leaves, and calls of unseen animals filled the air. This wasn’t just a trek it was a cinematic journey straight into nature’s secret realm.
History of Jivdhan Fort
Perched at an elevation of around 3,750 feet, Jivdhan Fort is one of the five forts guarding the ancient Naneghat Pass, a historically significant trade route that once connected the Konkan coast to the Deccan plateau.
Built during the Satavahana era, it later served as a strategic location during the Maratha Empire. In fact, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is believed to have used this fort for surveillance and military logistics. Today, it stands tall with its age-old gates, hidden caves, and natural defense structures, offering trekkers a mix of adventure and ancient charm.
The Trek Begins – Lost in the Wilderness
As the sun peeked over the horizon, we entered the forest. With several trails merging and splitting, the path was initially confusing. Thankfully, the drone guided us to the right direction, cutting through the maze of greenery.
The thick jungle of Jivdhan felt like stepping into a mythical land fog floated between the trees, and every turn revealed something more magical than before. Soon, a directional indicator carved into a rock confirmed we were on the right path.
Emerging from the jungle trail, we hit a steep rock patch lined with natural stone steps. After a quick break to recharge, we climbed further and finally reached the majestic Mahadarwaja (Main Entrance) of Jivdhan Fort. Carved beautifully into the rock face, the gateway is a reminder of ancient craftsmanship and strategic fort design.
Just ahead, we met the ever-energetic JKV Family an inspiring moment for all of us. Their energy fueled our next climb!
Hidden Caves, History & Vanarlingi Sulka
Exploring further, we came across caves resembling ancient rooms, possibly once used as shelters or storerooms. Walking through them made us reflect on the importance of conserving such historic structures. These aren’t just old stones – they are whispers from our past.
On the southern end of the fort lies the jaw-dropping Vanarlingi Sulka, a sharp vertical pinnacle that looks almost impossible to scale. Yet, it’s a hotspot for rock climbers and rappellers, who brave its steep face with ropes and sheer determination. Standing here, we learned about rappelling techniques, and watched adventurers in action. It was thrilling!
Panoramic Views – Bhimashankar Range to Junnar Marg
As we reached the top of the fort, the west side gave us a panoramic view of the Mahadarwaja, Vanarlingi Sulka, and ancient water reservoirs still holding clean water. Turning eastward, we saw grain storage chambers and the route leading towards Junnar.
Every side of the fort tells a different story of survival, trade, and strategy. And from the northern edge, yet another reservoir reminded us how smartly these forts were built to store water and sustain their residents.
After soaking in the history, scenic views, and refreshing air of Jivdhan Fort, we knew it was time to descend. But we weren’t leaving empty-handed we were taking back memories of drone discoveries, jungle sounds, ancient structures, and the pride of exploring a Maratha legacy.
