Manikgad Fort – A Hidden Gem of the Sahyadris Explored with Heart

Today, I set out on an adventurous journey to uncover the mysteries of an underrated Sahyadri marvel – Manikgad Fort, nestled in Maharashtra’s Raigad district, close to Panvel. Inspired by raw nature, ancient ruins, and the majestic history of forts built by our Maratha warriors, this trek was not just a hike, but a journey back in time.

If you are someone who loves trekking to ancient forts surrounded by dense forests, panoramic views, and stories that echo Maratha glory, Manikgad Fort should be on your list. Located about 27 km from Panvel, this hidden fortress offers a challenging yet peaceful monsoon and winter trek, ideal for history buffs and nature lovers alike.

History of Manikgad Fort

Built during the 17th century by the Maratha Empire, Manikgad was primarily constructed as a watchtower to oversee trade routes coming from the coastal ports into the Deccan. The fort was an important sentinel over the ancient trade path that passed through Umberkhind, and it was later captured by the British in the 19th century.

Its strategic location offered clear visibility over other forts like Irshalgad, Prabalgad, Kalavantin Durg, Matheran Range, Sudhagad, Sagargad, and more – making it a pivotal observation post.

Our Journey Begins – From Panvel to the Base of Manikgad

The day began with a thrilling ride from Panvel, where the city slowly faded into lush greenery and winding Sahyadri paths. By late morning, we reached the base village of Manikgad, a quiet settlement tucked within the Raigad district.

Just as we were about to begin, a heartwarming moment happened we met a kind elderly local, a true gem of the village, who joined us for the trek. Having lived here his entire life, he became our guide, storyteller, and silent protector during the journey.

Into the Forest – Trekking Under the Blazing Sun

The trail kicks off with a mix of flat paths and steep climbs. The scorching heat was real, and I realized how essential a local guide is not just for direction, but for safety, water sources, and even stories you won’t find in books.

As we passed rocky trails and shaded forest patches, we encountered the Hanuman temple, a resting and spiritual point for trekkers that fills you with energy.

Soon, we reached the massive stone entrance of the fort. The architecture may be worn by centuries of sun and rain, but its presence still commands respect. The gate opens up into water cisterns – the first structure we explored. These ancient water reservoirs once sustained life atop the fort and still collect fresh rainwater today.

Atop the Fort – Balekilla, Ruins & a View Worth the Climb

The climb to the Balekilla (citadel) rewards you with sweeping views. As I stood on top, I could identify forts and ranges like:

  • Irshalgad
  • Kalavantin Durg
  • Matheran Range
  • Sagargad
  • Sudhagad
  • Umberkhind Valley

Scattered across the plateau are ruined structures, possibly once used for storage, administration, or housing. Although time has weathered them, their placement and stonework reveal the importance of this fort as a strategic point of control and surveillance.

Manikgad may not be as frequently visited as other Sahyadri forts, but that’s its charm. It’s a fort with a past, a story carved in basalt stone, and winds that whisper tales of Maratha bravery. It once guarded vital trade links and served as a checkpoint between coast and interior a purpose that echoes in its powerful vantage.

Final Thoughts

As we began our descent from Manikgad Fort, the sun started its journey down the horizon. The sweat, the heat, the climb all faded, replaced by a feeling of peace and purpose. It’s treks like this that remind us how deeply our land is tied to courage, struggle, and pride.

So if you’re searching for a trek that challenges your body, touches your soul, and educates your mind, pack your bag for Manikgad Maharashtra’s silent guardian.

If you’re passionate about exploring historic forts across the Sahyadris, you’ll love what’s ahead.
