Exploring the Virupaksha Temple

One of the most iconic sights in Hampi is the Virupaksha Temple, a centuries-old Hindu temple dedicated to Virupaksha, a form of Lord Shiva. Built in the 7th century, this architectural marvel is renowned for its intricate carving, stunning pillars and eye-catching decorations. It is said that the temple was constructed as a dedication to Lord Shiva and his consort Pampa. As you explore the temple, you’ll see over 30 shrines dedicated to different gods and goddesses representing different cycles of creation. You’ll also notice many intricately carved sculptures that tell stories about ancient Hindu deities and legends. Even the wooden beams and windows are carved with ornamental designs of flowers, birds and geometric shapes!

If you’re looking for a good view, head up to the top of the main gate which was built alongside a massive stone boulder that serves as a reminder of Hampi’s remarkable history. The main gate will give you a bird’s eye view of the lush greenery around and towering gopurams that make up Virupaksha Temple’s complex network of shrines. The temple is full of fascinating details and intense colors that tell stories about Indian culture centuries ago. It houses several shrines dedicated to different aspects of Hindu mythology; many sculptures depict events from the great epics Ramayana and Mahabharata; and its ceilings are adorned with magnificent frescoes that come alive in the soft light of day.
