Welcoming You to the Monsoon Magic of Nimgiri Fort
Are you looking for an offbeat yet rewarding trek in the Sahyadris near Pune this monsoon? Welcome to Nimgiri Fort, a lesser-explored gem in Junnar taluka, offering panoramic views, hidden caves, ancient temples, and the thrill of riding through foggy roads near Malshej Ghat.
I, recently explored this fort on a morning bike ride from Dombivli, capturing the journey for you so you can plan your own adventure to Nimgiri Fort easily.
Starting the Ride: From Dombivli to Malshej Ghat
Early in the morning, I geared up and started my bike ride from Dombivli, moving towards Malshej Ghat as the monsoon mist wrapped around the Sahyadris, creating a magical canvas of greens and clouds. The ride itself is a treat for monsoon lovers, with waterfalls dotting the route and the occasional glimpse of Pimpalgaon Joga Dam reflecting the morning light.
I even met some JKV subscribers along the way, sharing the excitement of exploring this offbeat fort together.
After crossing the foggy curves of Malshej, I reached Khandichiwadi, the base village for Nimgiri Fort trek. The village is simple and welcoming, with the fort visible above, partially hidden by clouds drifting across its ancient stone walls.
The Trek Begins: Temples, Wind, and Nature’s Beauty
The Nimgiri Fort trek is an easy climb, making it beginner-friendly, but what makes it thrilling is the strong winds that rush through the ridges, especially during monsoon.
-
As you start ascending, to your left you will find the Kalubai Temple.
-
Moving ahead, you will reach the Hanuman Temple, where the winds grow stronger, and you can feel the monsoon chill brushing against your face.
-
The trail is scenic, with green slopes, wildflowers, and occasional glimpses of distant waterfalls.
Exploring the Top of Nimgiri Fort
After the final steps, you enter Nimgiri Fort and are greeted by:
-
Three rock-cut water reservoirs still holding clear water from the rains.
-
A large cave, which served as a shelter for travelers and warriors in earlier times.
-
A panoramic view showcasing Hadsar Fort, Hanumantgad, and the surrounding Sahyadris, appearing like green islands amidst drifting clouds.
Standing at the top with the wind howling and clouds moving around you feels like standing on a floating fortress in the sky.
