Sudhagad Fort : Explore the Hidden Gem of Raigad

There’s something magical about trekking in the monsoon. The earthy smell of rain, lush green trails, and mist dancing over the Sahyadris create moments you’ll never forget. Today, I’m sharing my personal journey as I explored Sudhagad Fort (Bhorapgad) in Raigad, Maharashtra, starting from Kharghar and weaving through Pali, receiving blessings at the Ballaleshwar Ganpati Temple, before finally reaching the ancient walls of this fort that still echo stories of the Maratha empire.

History of Sudhagad Fort

Sudhagad Fort, also known historically as Bhorapgad, is a hill fort standing at around 2,030 ft in the Sahyadris. Its history dates back to the 2nd century BC, with evidence of caves around indicating its ancient past. It became strategically significant during Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s reign, who saw Sudhagad as a potential capital due to its central location, though Raigad was ultimately chosen.

Sudhagad has witnessed various rulers, from Bahamanis to the Marathas, with remnants of watchtowers, gates, temples, and water reservoirs whispering stories of those times. It’s not just a trek; it’s a walk through history wrapped in the embrace of nature.

Starting the Journey

We started early from Kharghar and made a brief but peaceful stop at Ballaleshwar Ganpati Temple, Pali, seeking blessings for a safe trek as monsoon showers graced the morning.

Soon, we reached Thakurwadi, the base village for the Sudhagad trek, where our adventure officially began.

As we began ascending, the cool drizzle, fog, and greenery transformed the trail into a serene monsoon paradise. Early on, we came across a Smarak (memorial), marking a moment to pause and reflect before the stone steps of the first stage began.

Exploring the Fort

Moving ahead, we encountered Pacchapur Darwaja, a sturdy gateway that has stood against centuries of weather, and the two massive Chilkhati Buruj guarding the fort. These bastions offer views of clouds brushing the treetops, making it a perfect place to capture drone shots despite the drizzle.

Once at the top, we entered through the fort’s main door, turning left to find Kamal Tala, a picturesque waterbody that adds charm to the fort’s landscape. Nearby, we visited the Mahadev Temple, where the calm and quietness amidst the clouds felt divine.

We also came across ancient water reservoirs, still holding monsoon water, showcasing the fort’s self-sufficient design.

nside, the Pantsachiv Wada stands tall with its age-old stone architecture, where you can still feel the echoes of past warriors and administrators. A temple dedicated to Bhoraidevi near the wada adds to the spiritual aura of Sudhagad.

After spending time exploring these spots and absorbing the fort’s energy, we began our descent, hearts full and minds refreshed by the beauty and history of Sudhagad Fort.

Final Thoughts

The Sudhagad Fort trek is not just a climb; it’s a journey through lush green monsoon paths, ancient Maratha architecture, and spiritual calmness, making it a must-do for nature lovers, trekkers, and history enthusiasts.
