Discover the Majesty of Hadsar Fort: A Trek Through History and Sahyadri Views

If you’re craving an offbeat Sahyadri trek blending history, sculpture, and nature, Hadsar Fort near Junnar is a perfect escape. Recently, I explored this fort with my father and met the JKV Family, making it a day filled with adventure, learning, and memories. Let me take you through this timeless fort and why it should be on your trekking list.

History of Hadsar Fort

Hadsar Fort, standing tall in the Junnar region of Maharashtra, is believed to have existed since the Satavahana period and later came under the control of the Yadavas and the Bahamani rulers before becoming part of the Maratha Empire. The fort was strategically important, controlling the trade routes between Pune and the northern Konkan region.

Documentary evidences explain that Hadsar was one of the forts exchanged in the 1637 agreement between Shahaji Raje and the Mughals. In 1818 the British forces conquered Junnar and the forts in this region.

The fort is especially famous for its entrance gate, a masterpiece carved out of a single rock, showcasing the architectural brilliance of its era.

Starting the Trek

We reached Pethechi Wadi, the base village of Hadsar Fort, early in the morning. The village is surrounded by lush fields and hills, adding a perfect rural backdrop to your trek. Before starting the climb, we visited the Mahadev Mandir at the base.

We began our climb from the western side of the fort, taking the well-marked stone steps. The route is a delightful blend of carved steps, rocky patches, and greenery, making it enjoyable even in monsoons.

Along the way, we met JKV Family members, adding warmth and local connection to the journey.

As we climbed further, we reached the main entrance (Darwaja) of Hadsar Fort, which is truly a unique marvel. Unlike any other fort entrance, the bastion and the gateway are carved out of a single rock, showcasing an intricate design that has survived centuries.

Exploring the Top of Hadsar Fort

Once we crossed the entrance, the fort opened up with serene views and cool breeze. We saw the water reservoir “Kamani”, which still holds water and was once essential for the fort’s survival.

We also explored:

  • A lake located on the fort providing reflections of the sky and surrounding bastions.
  • Rooms that were once used by sentries, giving you a glimpse of life on the fort.
  • Another Mahadev Mandir on the fort, a quiet spot for rest and reflection.
  • In the southern side of the temple, we saw destroyed structures, reminding us of the fort’s layered history.

After spending time exploring, capturing views, and feeling the wind on the top, we started our descent, carrying memories of another enriching trek.
