The trek to Ratangad Fort, nestled in the Sahyadri range of Maharashtra, is not just a trail it’s an emotion. In the first week of October, I embarked on this thrilling journey with my close friends, and the experience was nothing short of magical. From midnight adventures to mist-covered trails, ancient temples to colorful wildflowers Ratangad offers a perfect blend of nature, spirituality, and history.
Temple Trails and Trekking Vibes Begin
Our journey began in the quiet hours of the night at Dombivli Station, where I met my enthusiastic trek group. The excitement was palpable as we geared up for what was going to be a memorable adventure. After traveling through the night, we reached the ancient Amruteshwar Temple by sunrise.
As we passed through the peaceful village of Ratanwadi, the calm waters of Pushkarni Lake greeted us. Walking along the side of a stream, we admired the blooming flowers adding color to the trail. We crossed 2–3 gentle streams, entered a dense forest, and to our left appeared a refreshing waterfall, its sound blending perfectly with the rustling leaves and chirping birds.
Misty Trails, Wild Forests
The second stage of our trek welcomed us with thick fog, casting a dreamy vibe across the landscape. The sound of birds chirping echoed through the valley, making the atmosphere feel alive and deeply connected with nature. Eventually, we reached a historic junction a significant spot where one path leads to Ratangad Fort and the other to the mighty Harishchandragad. We paused here, reflecting on how many brave souls must’ve walked this very path in the past.
Continuing our climb, we reached the iconic broken stone steps a symbol of the fort’s ancient heritage. Two staircases appeared ahead; after climbing them, we finally reached the majestic Darwaja (entrance gate) of Ratangad. Just inside, a small Ganpati idol welcomed us with divine serenity. We had made it!
At the summit, we explored the ancient caves a perfect spot to relax after the demanding ascent. As night fell, we pitched our tents and enjoyed a heartwarming dinner.
Day Two: Fog, Flowers & a Fort Stories
The next morning, we awoke to a valley wrapped in dense fog. Though we didn’t climb back to the fort, the day was filled with a new purpose. My friend Amol Jamdare introduced his inspiring project “Durg Ek Olakh”, which aims to educate school children across Maharashtra about trekking, fort history, and celebrating Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti with pride and awareness.
We spent the day exploring the floral richness of Ratangad. This region is a paradise for nature lovers, especially known for its Karvi flowers, which bloom once in seven years, and bright yellow Sonki flowers. Their presence made the fort look even more divine. We also visited the Hanuman Darwaja, capturing memories in our hearts and cameras.
As we bid farewell to Ratangad Fort, my heart was full. The journey wasn’t just about reaching the top it was about the moments, the people, the silence, and the stories the fort whispered through its ruins.
Final Thoughts
Ratangad is more than a trek it’s a soulful experience that connects you with nature, history, and yourself. Every stream crossed, every flower seen, and every stair climbed felt like a step back in time. As I descended through the dense forest, my mind felt refreshed and my heart lighter.
This journey reminded me that the real beauty of travel lies not just in reaching a destination but in the stories created along the way.
