Pandavgad Fort: A Journey into Satara’s Hidden Gem

There’s something magical about early morning travel the roads are quiet, the air is crisp, and the fog creates a curtain over the Sahyadri hills, hiding stories waiting to be discovered.

This time, our destination was the majestic and mysterious Pandavgad Fort, tucked near Wai in Satara district. With a heart full of excitement and curiosity, we left from my village in Satara and drove toward the base village, Gundewadi.

History of Pandavgad Fort

Pandavgad Fort, situated at an elevation of around 4,177 feet, has roots going back to the Shilahar dynasty. The fort later came under the reign of the Marathas and even saw the presence of the British.

Its name, Pandavgad, is believed to be linked to the Pandavas of Mahabharata, and it’s said they once took refuge here. At the summit of the fort lies a temple dedicated to the Pandavas, adding to the mythical charm of this hidden destination.

The Journey Begins – From Fog to Fort

The fort welcomed us with a blanket of fog that made its presence feel even more mysterious. From the moment we saw Pandavgad standing tall ahead of us, hidden partly in the mist, I knew this was going to be one special trek.

After reaching Gundewadi, we began our climb. There are two known routes to Pandavgad Fort one from Wai Taluka and another from Bhor Taluka. We took the Wai route. As we walked through dense vegetation and patches of wild plants, the surroundings kept us engaged. Birds chirped, the breeze whispered, and the trail slowly revealed the fort’s secrets.

One thing unique about Pandavgad is that it has a natural rock barrier before you reach the actual fort. Climbing it was both challenging and thrilling. Once we crossed it, we were greeted with panoramic views of the hills below and an enormous lake atop the fort.

This lake, surrounded by silence, reflected the sky and made us pause to soak in the beauty. It’s rare to find such a large water body at this elevation.

While walking toward the northern side of the fort, we saw the Menavli village route in the distance. Menavli is famous for its ghat and heritage homes, and from here, it added another dimension to the fort’s surroundings.

Soon after, we were delighted to meet the JKV family – Sharing the same passion for forts and history made the encounter truly special.

Temples, Water Tanks & Forest Views

The fort surprised us again with six unique water reservoirs, each carved in a different style. It’s incredible how ancient engineers built these, sustaining life even at this altitude.

Then came the main entrance – Pandavgad Darwaja grand, sturdy, and filled with history. Further ahead, another smaller doorway stood, reminding us that forts often had multiple layers of defense.

Next, we arrived at the Hanuman Temple, a peaceful spot surrounded by stone carvings. And then, what gave this fort its name the Pandav Temple. In front of it, a small pond shimmered under the afternoon sun.

Being there felt like a moment frozen in time. It’s not just architecture, but devotion carved in rock.

Before we descended, we captured some amazing drone shots that revealed the dense forest surrounding Pandavgad Fort. From above, it looked like the fort was being hugged tightly by nature green, vast, and untouched.

To the south, we spotted multiple villages dotting the landscape a beautiful contrast of history and modern life coexisting.

Final Thoughts

andavgad is more than just a trek it’s a spiritual, historical, and emotional journey. From the misty climb to meeting local explorers, from ancient temples to natural wonders, the experience has left a mark on my heart.

If you’re planning to explore hidden forts in Satara, don’t miss Pandavgad Fort. It’s perfect for history buffs, trekkers, nature lovers, or anyone looking for peace away from city chaos.
